farmerbrown is San Francisco Soul.

We are a destination where good things gather: locally-sourced seasonal ingredients, west coast freshness and time-honored southern recipes from the Creoles to the Carolinas, artful and seasonally celebrated cocktails that blend well with fresh beats. All come together to define modern Americana cuisine. With an ambience that mixes true southern providence and generosity of spirit with the heart of San Francisco, you feel native in an instant — welcomed as a member of the family.

Any given night promises a constant contrast of energies that fills the space nicely. They say, evidence of a great meal are the feelings that linger afterwards. farmerbrown prides itself in bringing you that unique sense of home.

He & She

farmerbrown was built from the ground up by owners
Jay Foster and Deanna Sison Foster. A true labor of love, the restaurant
was created from their passions: hers, community, and his, food.

Deanna is constantly driven by authentic and wholehearted connectedness—from the neighborhood, to the city, to the food. This drive is reflected in the restaurant’s charm and hospitality. Jay is more than an adventurous restauranteur, but a deeply passionate chef with roots in the American South. This continues to define him, his culinary approach, day-to-day work ethic, and most valuably his relationships with the staff and patrons he calls family.

What Folks Say

"It's a perfect Southern homage."
michael bauer, 2013

"Classic upscale southern food is served with urbane style
and a socially-conscious slant."

"It feels like pure, unadulterated San Francisco, and that's hard to beat."
michael bauer, 2006

"Wonderful fried chicken and fixings for dinner and brunch
at the corner of Funky and Town"

"Fresh takes on soul food with an upscale bent."

"Our pleasure did not hinge solely on having perfect food—
it was about the whole experience."

"There’s jazz in the air/Spiced peanuts on the bar.
Don’t need to get fancy/Just come as you are."

We enjoy serving focused and complex flavors while keeping to the “family recipe.” We believe that a great meal will not only fill you up, but uplift you. That’s soul food at its finest.

community
farmerbrown nests in the heart of the city in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Bordering the Mission/Market street corridors, this older downtown residential community has colorful stories to tell and our restaurant is blessed with natives, business owners, and friends who fill our space with them on a daily basis. The energy is always bright, the personalities as colorful and this makes our establishment burst with personality.

We make it an important part of our operations to give the best of ourselves and this business to the community around us and in doing so, we are constantly reminded of what’s important in life. This neighborhood is beautiful because of its resilience, standing strong in the face of earthquakes, ever-changing demographics and economy. We are deeply grateful that we are welcomed here and we open our arms in return to all those who need to feel at home, wanderers and travelers alike.
